Tarot: will they come back? How to read the cards about someone's return

Which cards can speak of a possible return, how to phrase the question, and why a reading is never a promise about the future.

When a relationship breaks off or someone pulls away, one of the most frequent questions asked of tarot is simple and direct: “Will they come back?”

Behind that question, though, there are usually many others. Is there still a feeling? Is the distance permanent or temporary? What is preventing them from coming closer again? And above all: is there still potential between two people?

Tarot should not be read as a firm promise about the future. It can, however, help you look at the current situation, the emotions involved, the obstacles and the possible developments.

What tarot can tell you about a return

A reading about someone's return should not stop at a plain “yes” or “no”. The cards can show, for example:

• whether the emotional bond is still there;
• what energy exists between the two people today;
• what caused or maintains the distance;
• whether there is any desire to come closer again;
• which obstacles might prevent it;
• which direction the relationship could take.

Which cards can point to a return?

There is no card that automatically means “this person will come back”. The meaning always depends on the question, on the card's position and on the other cards in the spread.

Some cards, however, take on particularly interesting meanings when the question is about a possible reconnection.

Six of Cups. One of the cards most associated with the past, with memories and with what returns into our life. In a love question it can point to nostalgia, shared memories, or a person still looking emotionally towards what has been. But nostalgia and return are not the same thing: the other cards clarify whether that memory can turn into new contact.

Judgement. It can speak of awakening, of realisation, of situations asking to be re-examined. In a reading about an ex or someone who has withdrawn, it can indicate that something is not entirely finished, or that the moment has come to look at the relationship again with more awareness.

Two of Cups. It evokes meeting, reciprocity and emotional connection. In a favourable position it can suggest that there is still room for the two people to meet. On its own, though, it does not guarantee a return: you need to see what the cards about obstacles and future potential are showing.

Eight of Cups. It often describes emotional withdrawal, or the decision to leave something behind. In a question about a return it is therefore an important card, but it must be read in context. It may describe what has already happened, or point to a distance that is still necessary.

Can the cards say when they will come back?

It is natural to want to know not only whether, but also when someone might return. Timing, though, is one of the most delicate aspects of a tarot reading.

Cards can suggest movement, waiting, acceleration or blockage, but automatically turning each card into a precise number of days or weeks risks offering a certainty the reading does not have.

A more useful question is often: “What development is possible between us in the coming period?” That way the reading can focus on the dynamic of the relationship without forcing a date.

If the cards show a return, does it mean it will definitely happen?

No.

A tarot reading describes a situation and its possible developments, based on the energies and dynamics present at the moment of the question.

People can change their mind, make different decisions or go through new events. That is why a favourable card should not be read as a promise.

It is more useful to read the future as a possibility: “If the situation continues in this direction, what could happen?” The distinction matters especially in love questions.

How to phrase the question well

A precise question allows a more meaningful reading. Besides “Will they come back?” you can ask:

• “What is the emotional situation between us today?”
• “What is standing in the way of a possible reconnection?”
• “Is there still potential between us?”
• “How could our relationship evolve?”
• “What should I understand about this distance?”

Why one card is often not enough

When there are feelings, distance, misunderstandings and expectations, a relationship can rarely be described through a single symbol.

A seemingly difficult card may sit next to cards of opening and change. Equally, a very positive card may appear beside symbols of distance or indecision. It is the relationship between the cards that builds the reading.

The way you choose the cards matters too
